BIOGRAPHY

John L'Ecuyer wrote and directed his first feature, Curtis's Charm, that became a cult hit, travelled to over 50 Film Festivals and garnered a Best First Feature Jury nod at TIFF - along with a John Spotton NFB award for his short experimental, UseOnceAndDestroy.

 

John next directed the critically acclaimed Indie feature, St Jude and his feature Documentary, Confessions of a Rabid Dog (About Montreal’s heroin problems and youth homelessness) won top prize at The Hot Docs Festival.

 

His latest Indie feature, The Riverbank, was the Gala opening film at The Sudbury FF ) /then multiple airings on HBO Canada and was produced by Academy Award nominated producers Paul Stephens and Eric Jordan. Previously, John’s 4th Indie Feature (In French) was set in Haiti and entitled,  Le Gout Des Jeunes Filles, which played on 11 Quebec screens for over six months, was featured at the Alliance Francaise in New York, TIFF, Montreal Festival de Nouveau Cinema, Vancouver and Atlantic Festivals as well as playing Theatrically in Paris and has toured numerous festivals around the world, notably throughout Africa. 

 

All of John’s 5 Indie features (plus his Feature Documentary) have premiered at The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

 

Besides Directing the Indie RomCom ‘A Date With Misfortune’, one of John’s latest TV venture was solo Directing an 8 part Chinese/Canadian crime series called Blood & Water. The dark, powerful and provocative series was filmed in Toronto and Vancouver, and was a 3 language (Cantonese,Mandarin and English).

 

Back in Montreal, John directed multiple episodes of  Real Detective (Netflix/USA) along with the Pilot -and multiple episodes over 2 seasons- of The Detective for CBC. 

John has directed over 150 hours of dramatic TV, notably episodes of Queer as Folk, DaVinci's Inquest, ReGenesis, 11 Cameras , The Listener, The City, Murdoch Mysteries, Gangland Undercover  and five A/E Nero Wolfe MOWs with Timothy Hutton. He also directed 24 episodes of ReGenesis, a TMN/HBO Canada series on which he also served as Creative Producer. 

 

His TV Movies on CTV, A/E, HBO Canada/TMN and CBC, From the life story of Abortionist, Henry Morgentaler (Choice/CBC) to Gay Activist Marc Hall  (The Marc Hall Story:Prom Queen CTV) to the Mormon issue (In Gods Country)- CTV) have three times topped Viewership records. The Tv Movie, Prom Queen, also had a Gala screening at the Palm Springs Film Festival and was offered a Theatrical Release at The esteemed Castro Theatre in San Fransisco.

 

John has been nominated and won several Genies, Geminis, DGC Awards, Columbus Film Awards, Reims TV Fest Awards, TVO Awards and others for Writing and Directing.

 

His book UseOnceAndDestroy (About Heroin Addiction in Montreal) was published in 1997 by Marginal Press.

 

TVO (TV Ontario) created a documentary chronicling John’s life that airs regularly and was originally broadcast in 2009. 

John is now in development on two TV series  – As well, he is writing his next feature film called Botheration
